What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energetic healing system in which the practitioner uses vibrational energy therapy to promote healthy energy flow in the client. The treatment creates a state of calmness and balance. In this state, the body is better able to heal itself. Humans are amazing energy systems, so complex but with the natural ability to self- heal. Our bodies want to be in balance and healthy and a Reiki treatment can help.
Reiki is not a religion, nor does it require or discriminate regarding any religious belief. It cannot do any harm. During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner helps to initiate an inflow of compassionate, sustaining, life-energy which exists all around us and which many equate to unconditional love.
Energetic Anatomy: Each person’s energy field is like a cloud which fills the physical body and extends past the physical body – it is often referred to as the aura. It is believed that energy circulates throughout the entire field through 72,000 tiny energy pathways. Centers of energy, where energy is stored and distributed, are called “chakras”. Blockages, depletion or injury within this energy system cause the body to be out of balance and can lead to illness and disease.
The world as vibrational energy : We tend to think of the world in terms of solid objects and the space around them. In the vibrational model, the Universe, including physical objects, all of nature, light, sound, and human beings are composed of tiny particles vibrating at different frequencies. What we refer to as life-force or life-energy is a particular vibration. It is called “ki” or “prana” or “chi” according to different traditions.
Dr. Richard Gerber, in his book A Practical Guide to Vibrational Medicine, says “This vibrational viewpoint of health, a perspective that acknowledges the need for appropriate levels of life-energy flow throughout the body, requires a great leap in thinking beyond the limited biomechanistic paradigm of traditional medicine”.
So not only are we surrounded by vibrational energy - we are vibrational energy. In this way, we are connected to our environment, to each other, to all species and to the Universe.
Emotions and thought forms as energy – Stress: An important way in which the energetic healing system looks at emotional health is its recognition that emotions and thoughts are also forms of energy. What we refer to as the mind and body are a collection of energies. Prolonged stress or psychological trauma can create distorted energetic patterns which may stay in our bodies and cause blockages within the energetic system. They can be stored in any part of our body. A Reiki treatment helps clear these distorted energetic patterns to restore balance.
This is why some patients have an emotional release during a healing session. The often long-stored emotional energy pattern is released and the nourishing flow of revitalizing energy is restored. The Reiki practitioner does not need to know the reason, nor do they provide any kind of counseling or psychological analysis, sometimes even the patient doesn’t know the origin of the emotion because the thought form is so deeply buried. However, the release is the beginning of healing of the issue.
History of Reiki
Reiki came to the United States from Japan, via Hawaii. In 1917, Dr. Usui in Japan rediscovered an ancient hands-on healing technique. He named the technique Reiki, or Universal Life Force. In 1938, Mrs. Hawayo Takata from Hawaii, went to Japan to learn Reiki and brought it to the West. Reiki is now practiced throughout the United States and worldwide.
Reiki in Hospitals
The medical community is beginning to recognize the value of Reiki and has been adding it to services provided at hospitals, medical clinics, and hospice programs.
